It began in 1987. Jim Fritz and Fred Paschall met at a parish meeting where a member of the Diocesan Liturgical Committee presented upcoming changes to the parish and mass. Jim Fritz saw the need for a group of parishioners to join together in providing feedback regarding the changes. Jim’s crusade was joined by John Burke, another member of the parish, who felt the need to help. The group was named “The Defenders.”
In August of 1998 the Defenders of the Faith (DOTF) became incorporated as a nonprofit organization. DOTF was joined by Marion Thomas. The group began publishing a newsletter called “The Defender.” Fred Paschall was the key writer, John Burke and Jim Fritz wrote articles, and Marion Thomas did the editing.
In the year of 2002, Marion Thomas learned that the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) was allowing non- profits to establish low power radio stations. She was inspired to create our own Catholic radio station. They applied and qualified.
This is how Defenders of the Faith WDTF-LP and Splendor of Truth W242AR began.
From the beginning, God’s grace and help was evident. Jim Fritz stated, “I don’t know where we got the money to put this together. The equipment at that time was over $20,000.00 alone. It was truly God’s Grace!”
Jim and Marion have since transitioned these radio stations to the care of acting presidents Arlin and Theresa Messersmith, who feel blessed to be entrusted with this work.
Here we are today. The Lord planted the seeds with Jim and Marion. With Divine Providence He has now brought these two radio stations forth with a greater plan.
